Orea Z1 Flash Brew
"A zero-bypass iced pour-over recipe using a fine grind to achieve high extraction, intense strength, and balanced flavor."
Matteo D'Ottavio
Tips & Preparation
Background & Concept
- Flash brew uses hot water to extract coffee directly over ice for a refreshing, high-clarity iced drink.
- The Orea Z1 (zero bypass) is ideal because it forces all water through the bed, allowing for a finer grind without channeling.
- A finer grind increases extraction, compensating for the shorter brew volume needed to maintain strength over ice.
Adjustments
- If the slurry height prevents adding the next pour, your grind is too fine; go slightly coarser.
- For a more intense base (e.g., for tonic or milk), reduce the ice to 80-90g.
- To increase acidity/intensity rather than sweetness, reduce total brewing water to 200-210g by cutting the final pour volume.
Expectations
- Expected drawdown time is between 8:30 and 10:00 minutes.
- Natural/fermented coffees are more soluble and may extract faster and produce higher TDS than washed coffees.
