“Jaime Burbano is a multi-generational farmer in San Agustín, Colombia, and was instrumental in the early days of the Monkaaba group, helping the Ortega-Gómez family set up the community cupping lab at their farm. Working with Monkaaba let Jaime sell his coffee under his own name rather than blending it into larger regional lots, and he now holds more direct, long-term relationships with roasters. Rowan is buying his coffee for a fourth consecutive year. Historically Jaime has grown mostly Caturra; this harvest also includes Pink Bourbon. His coffees are consistently rooted in dark brambly flavors, and Rowan calls this year's the highest quality they have tasted from him. The cup shows plum, açaí, blueberry and purple florals like lavender and lilac. Monkaaba helps smallholders in San Agustín find better market access and prices, educates producers on how the supply chain works, and hosts open weekly cuppings so growers can evaluate their own coffee alongside peer feedback.
