“Zumba sits in Zamora Chinchipe, in Ecuador's far south, where the town grew up as a trading crossroads with Peru rather than a colonial foundation. The families behind Tesoros de Zumba are known locally as Charapanos, after a stubborn local ant, and many have farmed coffee here for three and four generations, keeping old Typica and Bourbon trees under shade and putting coffee pulp back into the soil as compost. Caravela has worked with them through its PECA team since 2017, tightening drying and fermentation lot by lot.”
