Highlights
“The Dots in this lot are peaberries and other exceptionally small seeds, sorted out of the main harvest and tracked as their own lot because they dry and roast differently from standard-sized coffee. Ripe cherries are hand-picked, the small seeds sorted out, then dried whole in thin layers on raised African beds, turned regularly for even drying and covered against rain; once moisture targets are met, the dried fruit is hulled away. Darara is a 0.88-hectare farm at 2,200–2,300 masl in Hamasho, Bensa, in the Sidama highlands, established in 2019 on former forest land and planted with JARC 74156, a pure-line Coffea arabica from the Jimma Agricultural Research Center’s 74 series. Cherries are harvested December to February and processed at Daye Bensa’s Gatta Farm station. Daye Bensa, founded in 1996 by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo, runs the Duka Project that keeps each small estate’s harvest separate and processed deliberately. First roast ships 2 November.”
