Highlights
“Karatu Coffee Factory was built in 1965 to process cherries from four villages - Karatu, Gitwe, Kibiru and Kigaa - in Gatundu, north of Nairobi, and now doubles as headquarters for the Gitwe Farmers Cooperative Society and its roughly 700 members. Manager David Kanya runs the day-to-day processing on a site at 1,883 masl with five soaking pits built to keep wastewater out of the nearby water sources. SL28 and SL34 make up almost all of the surrounding plantings, with a thin slice of Ruiru 11.”
