Highlights
“Murago is the village Basha Bekele started with. He took on the farm here in 2021 and has been widening his circle of neighbours ever since. It sits on red nitisol soils between 2350 and 2490 masl, cool ground where the nights hold around 14 degrees and the cherries take their time. Basha and his neighbours pick ripe red cherry by hand, going back to the same trees again and again because the fruit does not ripen all at once. The cherries are floated to drop the light ones, sorted by hand on raised tables, then dried whole on African beds under clean mesh for four to five weeks. From there they go to his own dry mill in Bombe village for hulling. We have worked with Basha for three years, since before he won the 2024 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence and the 2025 Taste of Harvest from his lots in Gonjobe. We taste orange and tangerine, with florals and honey behind them.”
