“High in Nyeri's Mathira West district, along the banks of the Ragati River, farmers of the Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society bring their harvest to Gichathaini — one of three washing stations the cooperative calls home. The land here seems built for coffee, with generous rainfall, fertile soil, and the cool, steady climate of the highlands near Karatina town. Cherries arrive ripe and are sorted the same day, then pulped, left to ferment overnight, and washed clean with water drawn straight from the Ragati.”
