Highlights
“Humure sits in Rwanda's Eastern Province, in the district of Gatsibo, on a hill that gave the station its name and that locals treat as a meeting point. The station started in 2011 and is part of Baho Coffee, the project led by Emmanuel Rusatira, who came to it after years running and managing washing stations and built a model around direct collaboration with smallholders. What sets Humure apart is that it is run entirely by women, from receiving and sorting cherries through processing and quality tracking. The farmers supplying it work small family plots, many around 250 trees, often intercropped with maize or potatoes. Cherries are sorted, fermented whole and anaerobic in sealed vessels to limit oxygen, then dried still in their skin and pulp as a natural.”
