“Wildfires swept Guji through the 1990s, and the reforestation effort that followed pulled Tesfaye Bekele back to the coffee farming he grew up around. He resigned his government post, planted a plot himself, and that plot became Suke Quto farm and its washing station, now supplied by 171 outgrowers. This natural lot grows in volcanic soil at 1,800 metres and up, dried in whole cherry so the fruit sugars work into the seed, then decaffeinated with Swiss Water's water-and-carbon method. The cup leads with blackberry, backed by dry black tea, chocolate through the middle and a red grape finish, fruit-forward without going jammy. Mill wastewater is held in purpose-built lagoons, the soil is fed with compost, and the farm has funded a new school in the neighbouring village.”
