Highlights
“Baragwi Kagongo comes from the Kagongo Factory on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya, operated by the Baragwi Farmers Cooperative Society in Kirinyaga County. The factory sits at 1,600-1,800 masl, where clay loam soils, 1,400 mm of annual rainfall and average temperatures around 20.5 °C slow cherry maturation. Flowering runs February to March and harvest October to December, with annual production averaging 1,700 bags of 60 kg. This fully washed lot blends heritage SL28 and SL34 with the disease-resistant Batian and Ruiru 11. Ripe cherries are hand-sorted, pulped, fermented overnight, washed and density-graded into P1, P2, P3, P lights and pods before drying on raised beds for 8-14 days. Baragwi is Kenya's largest coffee cooperative, serving over 15,000 members including some 1,500 active farmers at Kagongo, and it maintains standardised processing protocols across its factories with managers rotating every two years.”
