Tips & Preparation
Recipe Background:
- This method aims to provide a great cup of coffee in a faster period of time and mitigate issues like loss of sweetness and excessive grit.
Preparations:
- Gram scale with timer
- Mug
- Decanter (at least 600ml)
- Flat paddle or spoon
- Hot water source (tea kettle, pot, microwaved measuring cup)
Serving Size:
- One serving: 0-19 grams of coffee
- Two servings: 20-29 grams of coffee
- Three or more servings: 30+ grams of coffee
Grind Size:
- Finer than traditional French Press recipes (drip grind setting).
- Approximately 9 on Mahlkonig GKS (traditional dial).
- Approximately 15 on Baratza Encore.
- Approximately 3 on Fellow Ode grinder.
Variations:
- One Serving: Add coffee, add water, stir, plunge at 1:30.
- Two Servings: Add coffee, add water, stir, stir again at 1:30, plunge at 2:30.
- Three Servings: Add coffee, add water, stir, stir at 1:30, stir at 2:30, plunge at 3:30.
Recipe Steps
Add 28g of coffee to the French Press and tare the scale.

Pour 450ml of water as quickly as possible, trying to saturate all grounds. Start timer.

Stir to incorporate all dry grounds.

Stir a second time to reincorporate grounds and circulate water.
2:30
Plunge and pour everything into a decanter.
